Gendered Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on ASM Communities in KBK Districts, Odisha (2020–2021)

This study examines the differentiated socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on women and men engaged in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) across the KBK districts of Odisha. Using household surveys, gender-disaggregated data, and qualitative interviews, the assessment highlights disproportionate livelihood losses faced by women miners, increased unpaid care burdens, reduced access to health services, and heightened economic insecurity. The study also documents coping strategies, community support mechanisms, and institutional gaps. Findings inform gender-responsive recovery strategies, social protection measures, and targeted skill development interventions to strengthen resilience among women in ASM-dependent households.
